What it means to be an American part 1: Guns!

For sometime I felt the 2nd amendment was silly and antiquated. I always thought, “sure, citizens needed protection then, but now the government can take care of us.” If you think the government will take care of you, then you do not understand what it means to be an American. First of all this government was founded and created by people who didn’t trust governments. They had felt the ever pressing grip of the tyrant King George and didn’t want anything to do with him or similar governments. One of the ways the founding fathers ensured this was the 2nd amendment, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

The founding fathers wanted to make sure that if the United States ever had a tyrant president and that president began to take away their rights the people would not be defenseless and could rise up against this tyrant.  The president should realize he is a servant of the people, one of the ways our founding fathers ensured this was giving the people the power of guns; just as it was eloquently stated in V for Vendetta, “people should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people.” This is what our founding fathers wanted…a leader who was afraid of the people and therefore was willing to do the peoples will! I don’t think I have seen such a president in my lifetime…

So guns were originally meant to be another type of checks and balances. But what made me change my opinion concerning guns? It was because of hurricane Katrina. The people who had guns were able to keep their property from being looted. I did some more research and found out that the same thing happened during the LA riots. Store owners who had guns sat on their roofs and were able to protect their businesses from looters. Recently I read an article
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=55288 about this town that required gun ownership. The cause was a plummet in crimes and no murders for 25 years!

Nonetheless, after Katrina I thought, “I don’t want to be like those people trapped on my roof, waiting for my country to come and help me.” A true American is someone who doesn’t rely on the federal government. A true American trusts his local government and friends and family for security. If you want to be a true American, buy a gun and learn how to protect yourself. Further, buy some canned food and store up for a rainy day, don’t let yourself be stuck on your roof waiting for help that will not be coming.
